The models are almost identical. There are some slight changes to the grill but you would have to know what to look for to see the changes.

Are you surr you do not mean 97 and 98 Those were a major body change. Nothing significant from 87 to 88. Did you type wrong?

Check VIN before you buy. Every digit in the VIN means something. For instance, the first digit indicates country of orgin 1 is USA, 2 is Canada, J is Japan. the second indicates manafacturer. the ones in between are body and restraint codes. The eighth digit is engine code. W code indicates 4.6 Engine. the ninth, they call a check digit just to keep it honest. The tenth is the most important, it is the year code. starting in 1980 as A, 81 as B 87 is H but they throw in a ringer here, 88 is J. 97 is V. The next digit is the plant it was built in. All of your Town Cars should be Y indicating built at Wixom, Mich. the rest of the numbers are serial code.

Check with your Dealer or DMV for a more complete reference on how to read VIN. The other thing you might want to get from your Dealer is the accessory code book, it tells you every code there is or has been. These are not readly available to the public, but if you suck uo to your Service Advisor, (A box of Donuts will usually do it) You may just find one in your car.

Take it from an old Service Advisor and contract GME.
