Default New fourm members registration process

Could one of the admins chime in on what the current process is for people to join this fourm? I see that manual verification is in effect. What kind of waiting period are we looking at?New members how long did the process take you? Thanks.

The process has been in effect for a couple of years Steve. Michael approves all joins. Eliminates many, not all, spammers.

This is not correct. I'm no longer "employed" here as the "Admin" although I still retain the admin rights. Out of courtesy, once in awhile Ill check in and maybe remove a spam post or two, but all new registrants must pass the installed spam filter. Ones that do not pass are automatically declined. As far as I know, the forum is flying without a pilot.

Additionally, new posts with links are automatically thrown into a mod-queue (another spam prevention measure) which as far as I know, is not being minded.

Since the forum doesn't appear to be priority for LDC, I offered to repurchase the forum back from them... received no response.

Had someone contact me said they got turned down. Were using a Gmail account. I tried a new registrtion with my Gmail account got turned away. Tried my work Domain abm.com also got denied.

Guy who contacted me is sending in emails via the "contact us" but is not getting any reply/resoloution.

Just Wondering, Auto Pilot mode seems to be prevelant. Shame probably missing out on opinions from many folks!

Steve, for you, it could be that it was based upon IP use, that it rejected an account from your IP before, so it put a time out on accepting any sign ups from the same IP.

A forum I am a moderator on has tracking of IP use for spam checking, while it won't prevent the sign up, it will flag them for moderators as usually someone will sign up, ask a question, and wow, within 24 hours another new user comes along from the same IP and just happens to have a link to the solution. (and I would say about 95% of the spam signups are @gmail.com, and 90% are from IPs in India or Pakistan, but being a web development forum, we do also get good valid users from that area as well)

The spam filter checks a database of IP's and emails recorded at StopForumSpam.com - if the IP and/or email is listed, the registrant is denied.

I have heard through the Grapevine....the forum may be sold to another entity prior to the end of the year. I cannot say anymore at this time but I hope that things remain the same.

Well, new news for me. No wonder I have been popping more spammers lately.

As long as they keep the archive. That would suck to answer all those questions again! We would have to rehash all our arguments again!! LOL

Too bad, Michael has done a fantastic job - it takes a lot for new owners to not screw up a good thing.
