Yea the text messages are becoming a more prevelant thing. I like it better as when they call from a club I can barely hear them with the music.

Just make sure your crodegity old drivers know what a text message is and how to read them! LOL

Can you even get pagers anymore??

And if your cell phone plan does not allow for text messages may want to inform the clients that when handing the card as most assume they do. Could lead to some delays.

It is illegal to use a cellular phone, unless it is hands-free, while driving in DC, and just plain unsafe, and you can’t text hands-free, so I don't want drivers texting.

It is ok sitting outside of a restaurant or hotel, but at most airports here, you can't park CMVs, so you circle, and therefore should not be texting.

Sorry, Reader's Digest version:
We have Garmin Nuvis with Blue Tooth in the cars that recognize all company cel phones; the drivers talk to clients hands-free that way.

You know Salicete we have a new law going into effect here in CA in july that is similar to yours. Must use a hands free devise to talk on the phone while driving. But I don't think our law specifically addresses text messaging. But your right not good to do while driving. But recieving them while driving is not bad as long as they are short.

And seeing as you can program in quick replies (already typed out common responces) only a few clicks would be needed (less than dialing say). I think it could be a very usefull tool to our industry in the coming years as it gains better acceptance amoung users.

Edit: actually I was incorrect it does address text message use but only seems to prohibit it for people under 18. CA operators check out the law here:

I think your statement about it "gaining better acceptance" is correct, and I admit that I am not partial to the whole texting thing; I'm getting old, gimme a break. http://limos.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

As I mentioned, I have no problem with it while the cars are parked, but I still do not think professional drivers, chaufeurs, truckers, cab drivers, any of them, should read or send text messages while the vehicle is in motion.

In Arizona there IS a law agains texting while driving - as well as the requirement to use a headset.

I'm seeing developments now for driver communication systems so now you can send a whole bunch of info from a single press on a touchscreen PDA / Phone - no voice or texting needed. Much safer, much cleaner operation.
