Not too far from the truth
I went into the 7-11 gas station the other day and asked for five dollars worth of gas. The clerk farted and gave me a receipt.

Does anybody other than Deano and I remember when $5 worth of gas was more than your gas tank would hold? Now it fills your ashtray.

When I was in high school we'd put 50 cents worth of gas in the car and drive around all night.

Anybody who wants to know why gasoline prices vary from starte to state, check out gasoline taxes by state in this chart.

I worked at an Esso station in high school pumping gas and it was $.35 cents per gallon.

A gallon of Gas, a Pack of Smokes, a quart of Milk and a Loaf of Bread all use to cost about the same. Remember when a 12 oz Pepsi was just a dime and a candy Bar was a nickle.

The taxes are now twice the price of a gallon of gasoline WITH taxes in about 1960. The cost or living from 1960 to 2005 is determined by a factor of 6.55, so that a $.25 gallon of gasoline should now be $1.63. So the difference is not merely the cost of living.

If you think gasoline has gone up, try this one. In about 1960 when a kid finished law school he might get a yearly salary of about $7,500 from a law firm. Using the same cost of living adjustment, that translates to about $49,125 in 2005. The actual 2005 starting salary for a fresh-out-of-law-school-wet-behind-the-ears-good-for-nothing-brand-new lawyer is between $125K to $130K. The hourly billing rate for a seasoned partner in a law firm at the same time was about $50/hour, which translates to a 2005 billing rate of $327.50. The current actual rate for the same lawyer is closer to $500/hour and some are much higher. Doctors' compensation used to be a lot more than a lawyer, but that was then, this is now.
