Is there a webpage or resource on the internet to see if your potential new business name is not already in use? I do see many sites that what you to pay but I am looking for a free resource... Any ideas?

A low-tech but cheap way that is not always foolproof is to try to register a domain name in the proposed name of your new company.

EXAMPLE- XYZlimousines.com

Chances are if someone else is using that name, the domain won't be available, since most companies want their domain name to match their company name as closely as possible.

Also, when you go to form your business in the state in which you are located, the Office of Assessments and Taxation (or whatever it is called in your state) will do a name search to be sure the name is not used. Most states offer this information online at no charge.

Try this site too.

If this is a new business, check with your Secretary of State to register your legal business name. Most states will require a fee to give you a legal license or permit to operate in the state.

If it's strictly for a website, I used Go-Daddy.com to register a domain name. You'll have to secure a web host also.

Talk to the person who's developing your web site, they should have a good idea of what's needed.

When I went legal I used http://www.LegalZoom.com for my LLC, they do all of the legwork for you and do it quick. They did the research for me on looking to see if my chosen name was available.

For website hosting, domain names and such I only use http://www.KartHost.com . I've had my sites with Roy for 5 years now and he's always on top of his game, keeps software/hardware up-to-date and is only a phone call away whenever I have questions. He even has a forum to answer questions quickly on-line.

You really should have a firm do this for you I will explain why. the over all cost would be around $1000 give or take and then you have to decide if you want to take it further because once you have a Name and if you trade make it as I have you have an obligation to protect your name and there is a legal process to follow along with other implications as well.

It can take 6 months or more to get a Trade mark and Copyright. It is a process and if you want to protect yourself you need to do it right otherwise if you do not someone else can come in and take advantage of your good name and that would not be fun if it happened would it.

Best wishs
