So can someone report on what happened in Vegas with reference to the NLA, Host Contract, Directors? I "heard" things but cannot substantiate anything.

Mike,
I am planning on sending a letter out but let me give you some basic information.
Host is still the mgmt company for the NLA. Their deal, however, has been changed. Host has a 1 year management contract with the NLA that started on 1/1/01 and ends on 12/31/01. The RFP Process (Request for Proposal) will begin sometime between June 1 and October 1 seeking bids to compete against Host for a contract that will begin on 1/1/02. I will be actively competing. I have written a proposal and will focus between now and then in learning the association business and in planning and forming a company to manage the NLA.
I believe that I would be the best Executive Director for the membership of the NLA. I'm going to continue to work towards that goal. So, I don't feel that my effort was in vain. All NLA quarterly meetings (except the Show) will now be held in Washington DC. All NLA votes, by the way, will be published on the Net.
I'll add to this later.

Tom,
Do you know what parts of the RFP process will include?
1) Entire management of the NLA?
2) Management of the website?
Will they be accepting proposals for BOTH, or are the under the same umbrella?

Michael:
Here is the info you are requesting:
New Exective Board members:
Barbara Pastelak President
Ron Sorci VP
Carolyn Nelson 2nd VP
John Sinibaldi Secretary
David Seelinger Treasuer AKA "Man with the
the checkbook"
The Host contract was renewed for one year. New RFP's will go out in June/02. If Host hits their numbers and comes in with a good contract, they will be offered a two year contract.
New Board members elected by the membership:
Scott Solombrino
Don Kensey
Ron Sorci Re-elected
Mike Keller
The next two meetings will be held in DC. Barry Lefkowitz had his contract renewed for one year.

P.S.
To my previous post, an office will be established in DC.

Mike,
No idea on the NLA website.
I disagree with my friend John on Host and a Washington office.
I spoke to Sam Dunn and they are "considering" a DC office. Its not a done deal if you will excuse the pun.

I think that John is referring to the Executive committee when he refers to the "Executive Board."
Also, the fifth director elected (who has already trumpeted his election) was Cory Rozen, who is not new to the board. Unless I am misinformed, it is my understanding the RFPs for management of NLA go out in June 2001 (this year) not 2002, otherwise Host would have a 2-year contract rather than a one-year contract. Does anyone know which of these contradictory facts is correct?

I stand corrected. It's the executive commitee and yes I missed naming Cory Rozen.
Host felt they had a signed contract under the old board. In order to unite the Board and give Host something, an alternative was hammered out.
Host gets a one year contract for now. Monthly reports will be given to Board members and made available to members to rate the job Host is doing to make its numbers.
In June of this year, New RFP's will go out. Should Host meet its goals and submits a bid which is accepted, they will be given an addtional two year contract.
Hope this answers your question.

So who votes on the Host contract ... Directors only or members?
February 14th, 2001, 08:35 AM
The board of directors approves or disapproves the Host contract, and the Executive Director must sign it and it must be countersigned by the President. Host's position that because Darryl "President-Not-Quite-for Life" Norman signed it in December that they had a valid two year contract was a bunch of crap. They hustled Norman into signing it even though it had never been approved by the board and was not signed by the Executive Director (because NLA didn't have one after Bob Scott resigned), and then Host tried to claim that NLA had to "buy out" Host's contract rights. That didn't go far with Scott Solombrino and David Seelinger, who took over the negotiations, Host was told to stuff it and if they didn't get on board there would be NO contract - to which Host swallowed hard and accepted the inevitable. Do we really want to be dealing with people who use these tactics. I think not, and I think Host knows they can't hit the performance targets but decided to save face and take the one year deal on the theory that they have been able to control the NLA board for years and that this new board will, in the end, be no different. WRONG! Host should be out this year sometime.

Jim,
So you know and everyone else knows. I have joined the Association of Association Executives (ASAE)and I am quickly learning the "association business". I have the support of most of the major local limousine associations and more than a 100 members.
I will submit an extremely fair contract proposal in June and I will do everything possible to become the Executive Director. Again, its not about me, it is about what is best for the members. I will even consider a FAIR employment contract directly with the Board.
I'm not going anywhere. I'll do my best to ACCURATELY cover the board in the magazine and I'll continue to support local associations and operators all over the country.
Yes, Jim, I'm still a "people" person.

Just to keep things straight. The amended contract was hammered out by Sam Dunn, Marion
Mccormack,Ron Sorci and David Seelinger. They did a good job on moving forward.
