Looking out for the right chaffeur. What is your advice?

In the limo business are they usually Independent Conractors or employees too. I ask this becoz as a start up I will be having a lot of gaps in work hours and do not intend to pay for a driver sitting around.

How about on-call drivers...does that work well?

What would the typical pay for a chaffeur be in a metro area like DC?

Old veterans and retired cops are good ON CALL drivers. But finding a good driver - GOod luck. THere is no better driver than you.

There is a wealth of information on the right and wrong way to pay a Chauffeur right here on this site. Why should a Chauffeur be paid any different than a Factory, Office or any other worker. Pay them by the hour, pay your share of payroll taxes and required workers comp and you will be fine.

Good luck, I'm in Maryland, very near you and am having a terrible time finding drivers.

As an example, one of my applicants was an X-cop who was fired for making women pose for topless pictures to get out of tickets...just who I want driving my prom kids around.... http://limos.infopop.cc/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

You are going to have to give up some good coin to get experienced professional chauffeurs to work PT for you in the DC-Metro Area.

Don't do the IC thing; that is just begging for an unfriendly visit from the IRS. Hire "employees," maintain control of your people and standards. Pay your worker's comp, employee taxes and unemployment now. It is better than fines interest and penalties later.

Try school bus drivers. At least in the state of michigan, there is an extensive backround check, a fairly clean MVR, random drug testing, most will have a CDL/B with P and S and Air brake. They have summers off and they have the middle of the day off. For the most part if they can handle a bus load of 70 unruley children, they should be able to handle a car load of Drunks. Give it a try.

Another good source of part-time people are fire fighters. If you go to the stations, all have a bulletin board. You need the captain of the station or perhaps event a chief to allow you to post a flyer. These folks have a lot of time off, are generally level headed in emergencies and are used to serving people. They make ideal chauffeurs.
